The 14th annual Bear on the Square Mountain Festival, scheduled Friday through Sunday, April 16-18, will bring another outstanding lineup of musicians to Dahlonega.

The MainStage Tent headline acts include multiple International Bluegrass Music Association award-winning band, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper; Jesse McReynolds and The Virginia Boys, led by the surviving member of the legendary bluegrass brother duo of Jim & Jesse; roots music group The Dixie Bee-Liners; soul-stirring singers Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz with original roots country musician Kari Sickenberger; multi-talented acoustic musician John Lilly, making his fifth appearance at the festival; and Curtis Jones & Mountain Gypsy Project, a group of talented musicians led by Dahlonega resident Jones, who has performed before audiences throughout the world.

Throughout the three days of the festival, visiting and local musicians will gather in groups beginning at midday on Friday to jam on the lawn of the historic Gold Museum and at other points around the Public Square, providing the sounds of music throughout the downtown area. On Friday from 1:30-5:30 p.m., Southeastern Bluegrass Association members Estill Nicholson and Friends will be leading the jam on the square. A series of music workshops featuring many of the festival’s talented performers will be conducted throughout the three days, with Master Class Workshops on Friday and an Old-Time Mountain Dance planned for Saturday night.

Featured musicians for this year, including the headliners and several well known regional and local groups, will be onstage Saturday and Sunday in the large white tent in Hancock Park just north of the Public Square. Other scheduled performers include The Buzzard Mountain Boys, Gold Rush with Neel Pender, the Georgia Mudcats, High Windy, Whitepath, Camp Creek Committee, The Rosin Sisters, Curley Maple and the Georgia Pick and Bow Traditional Music School. The final act on Saturday will be the Rockin’ the Roots set: Honky Tonk Night in the Round featuring Ginny Hawker, Tracy Schwarz, Kari Sickenberger, John Lilly, Sonny Houston, Neel Pender and Dan Martin.

And, on Sunday morning, the MainStage Tent will be the scene of the annual Gospel Jam.

In addition to music, Bear on the Square also celebrates the traditional art and craft of the mountains in its juried Mountain Marketplace, offering handcrafted art based on Appalachian culture. The artists and their work will be available at booths around the Public Square which will be filled with pottery, handmade baskets, jewelry, candles, instruments, jams and jellies, artwork, and much more. With the prestigious John C. Campbell Folk School as a major sponsor for the second year, the festival will include artwork, performances, and demonstrations from some of the folk school’s dancers, musicians and artists.

Dahlonega’s business community is also participating in the festivities, with special showings at the art galleries on and near the Public Square. Plus, a number of local music venues have scheduled performances that weekend.

Special children’s activities in and around the Public Square are also planned during the event, including a hands-on Little Pickers Tent, where children can have fun with real old-time and bluegrass musical instruments, a Teddy Bear Picnic and a performance of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears on the Square.”

Has Earlier Starting Time, Sponsor for Event

The 14th Annual Bear on the Square Mountain Festival’s Live Country Auction, which will be held Friday, April 16, will have an earlier starting time this year. Festival officials also announced that the highly-popular opening night event has obtained a sponsor.

The event will take place in the MainStage Tent in Dahlonega’s Hancock Park adjacent to the Historic Public Square. A preview of auction items will begin at 5 p.m. with BlueBilly Grit, a premier bluegrass band from North Georgia, providing music. There will also be food available for preview attendees with catering by Shenanigan’s Irish Pub and Bourbon Street Grille of Dahlonega. Then, starting at 6 p.m.,the spirited bidding will get underway with professional auctioneer Sam Williamson running the show.

Auction Sponsor is North Georgia Wealth Management Group (www.ngwmg.com) of Dahlonega. Founded by Laura J. LaTourette, CFP®, the independent financial planning practice specializes in serving pre-retirees and retirees with fee-based and hourly financial planning and fee-based wealth management services, including wealth transfer and preservation through wealth structuring, estate planning, investment management and trust services.

The Live Country Auction is one of the most eagerly-awaited events of Bear on the Square weekend each year. It takes place in the large MainStage Tent in Hancock Park on the opening night of the festival.

Each year, the auction features the work of area folk artist Billy Roper, along with the work of other talented local artists and juried artists taking part in Bear on the Square’s Mountain Marketplace, including artists from the John C. Campbell Folk School, the marketplace sponsor. Among the items will be a painting by artist/musician Patsy Kline of the Appalachian Jam which takes place on the lawn of the Gold Museum in Dahlonega. There will also be bidding on gift baskets, services and other products from the local business community.

Melanie Pruitt, who is auction chair once again this year, said, “As in the past, we need the support of our local merchants, businesses, and community to make this auction a success. We will begin accepting donations and contributions any time between now and the [preferred] deadline date of Thursday, April 15.” Pruitt urged those planning to provide items for the auction to contact her prior to the deadline so she can get them on the auction log sheet. ”If donations are brought in late, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to get your name and donation on the log sheet for auction attendees and we don’t want to leave anyone out, if possible.”

Pruitt, who noted that contributors will receive a receipt for tax purposes, said she can be reached at 706-864-0374 or by email at melanie.pruitt@windstream.net This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.

From 2003 to 2008 cycling fans were treated to a great race – the Tour de Georgia.

This is the race which brought stage racing back to
the United States!

This is the race which is one of only three 2HC races in
the United States!

This is the ONLY race with the epic Brasstown Bald stage!

We missed the Tour de Georgia in 2009 and we want our Tour back!

It’s time to show sponsors and organizers what the Tour de Georgia means to us. Sponsors will follow the lead of fans and spectators.

The Tour de Georgia Foundation, Inc. (a 501c(3) public charity) is initiating a grassroots coalition made up of ALL cyclists, fans, bike clubs and retailers to shape the Tour de Georgia and grow the fan base every year. The Tour de Georgia should be the flagship event for all U.S. cyclists and we can all play a part in its success.

The Tour de Georgia is positioned to return. Applications for the traditional Tour dates for 2010 have been filed. Now we have to do our part to Bring Back the Tour de Georgia!

Tour de Georgia

HemlockFest is an annual benefit music festival, held on November 6-9, 2009, to increase public awareness and generate funds to help save the eastern and Carolina hemlock trees. Money raised will be used for support of the Georgia laboratories rearing adelgid-devouring beetles, education and research on the HWA problem, and assisting businesses and homeowners to protect hemlocks on their private property.

HemlockFest will be held at Starbridge . This is a beautiful 40 acre camping venue with small lake for canoeing, fishing, etc. 100% of donations/proceeds from the festival will go toward advancing the hemlocks defense against the woolly adelgid. Fire dance as well as music from such genres as singer songwriter, blue/newgrass, blues, Celtic rock, and jam band will be performed. Family and children’s activities will take place. Arts and Craft vendors will be present and food, drink, t-shirts and other festival paraphernalia will be available for purchase. Silent auction will take place. For directions or further information (on the hemlock/woolly adelgid issue, the bands, ticketing, where to make donations, how you can help, etc.) please visit our website.
