<p>This year’s theme is “Engaging Communities.” You are invited to submit a proposal that links to one of these six threads of various forms of engagement within Appalachian Studies:</p>
<p>• ACTION &#8211; struggles for social, environmental, or economic justice;<br />
• ARTISTIC &#8211; expression through music, dance, folk art, handicraft, poetry, and literature;<br />
• RESEARCH – the study of Appalachian people and places including history, place, identity, culture, way of life, and regional significance;<br />
• PARTNERSHIP &#8211; strengthening cooperation among academia, grassroots groups, government agencies, community leaders, and other representatives in the region;<br />
• SUSTAINABILITY &#8211; preserving the future of Appalachia; and<br />
• PARTICIPATION- ensuring voices of diversity. Proposals directly relating to these six threads will be the first reviewed. Space permitting, other proposals relevant to Appalachia will be considered.</p>

<p>The David Brothers Band returns for an evening of modern jazz. This winter&#8217;s program features the music of electric bass master and innovative composer Jaco Pastorious, whose virtuosity, creativity, and exoticism mark him as one of the most independent minds in the history of American jazz. The David Brothers Band features North Georgia Performing Arts faculty members John David (drums), Kenyon Carter (saxophone), Andy David (piano) and bassist Robby Handley.</p>

<p>Joe Chapman, a music professor at North Georgia College &amp; State University, will mark the bicentennial of Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann with a free concert. Regarded as two of the leading composers of piano music during the Romantic period of the 19th century, Chopin and Schumann were born just a few months apart in 1810. The program will feature Schumann’s Sonata in G Minor, along with a complete performance of Chopin’s Ballades. Chapman has performed in the United States and eight foreign countries as a pianist, conductor, vocalist and accompanist. He has presented solo piano recitals across Georgia and throughout the southeast, including programs for public radio and television. Chapman also is an active arranger and composer.</p>
